Chessmaster 9000 includes all the trappings of its Windows counterpart, but thanks to a complete interface overhaul by Feral, it feels like a Mac game. It even connects to iTunes so you can listen.
Various tools are used as teaching aids for each level of player. For example, a novice would choose the mentor option that offers a chess tutor and a rudimentary education on legal moves by each piece. The intermediate player can invoke the mentor menu and choose the 'rate my play' feature to practice openings, get a rating by trying to predict moves in GM games or study classic games. The advanced player will play against various strong personalities with differing styles (whether user-defined or pre-set), practice a wide range of openings and go head-to-head with the strongest AI in a tournament setting.
The ability to create user-defined opponents is the real strength of the game. With nearly unlimited options and parameters available within the personality setup module, all aspects (e.g., style, aggressiveness, strength, randomness, book depth) pertaining to an opponent's proclivities can be 'programmed' easily through slider bar settings ranging from 0 to 200. Another learning tool is the opening book editor that allows the user to practice and learn opening lines, edit them or create and save his own. With the vast number of options available, the easy menu-driven interface (mouse point-and-click or keyboard controls) allows for an uncomplicated means of selecting options.
A wide range of chess sets is available from basic wood to marble, including 3D views that are thankfully adjustable as some of the defaults are difficult to use. Multiple settings of the major window options are available through the setup process in the nerve center of the game, the War Room. One of the more interesting features of Chessmaster 4000 Turbo is the ability to create and customize chess opponents to play at any level, whether it be a famous past grandmaster or your neighbor down the street.
You can hold your own tournaments with any number of players and enjoy watching the battle unfold before your eyes. While this may be tempting, time invested in playing against the various computer AI's is time well spent if your aim is to improve your own game through quick analyses of games played and use of the chess tutor option, along with normally on-the-mark annotations.
As an added bonus, a wonderfully written piece on the history of chess and an equally impressive 18-page rundown of past World Champions with emphasis on their styles is included in the Owner's Manual. Additionally, the game includes a perspective on 'Chess and Machines' and an enjoyable selection of chess related brain-teasers. The game contains a comprehensive on-screen help system both auditory and text based. Chessmaster 4000 Turbo is a powerful tool for both the serious player as well as the patzers among us interested in improving or practicing their game.
Graphics: 3D chess sets, SVGA option, windows based menus, 256-color -- a nice looking package overall. Chess pieces and boards are interesting and well defined.
Sound: A mixed bag. Music is more a distraction than enhancement (but in a chess game, who cares?) while sound effects invoked by movement of pieces or situations (such as check, captures, etc.) can be annoying. Voice quality is decent on auditory segments.
Enjoyment: Boils down to whether you like chess or not. If you're a fanatic, there's enough here to keep you busy for years.
Replay Value: Chess being chess, replay value is assured.
This was the first 32-bit title in the Chessmaster series offers features designed around the processors of the time. Modem and LAN play is available for the first time. Boards are viewed in 2D or 3D, and include many custom sets, with game options selected from surrounding windows and drop-down menus. Entering moves is now easier - if you click on a square which only one of your pieces can move to, it will move their automatically. Full games (including 500 recreated real-life classics) can be analysed from an expert perspective, and a library of common opening move sequences is included. Computer players act in a variety of ability levels and play styles - some are prepared to play for a draw, others are focused on keeping the centre of the board tidy, and so on.

The Chessmaster series is one of the oldest chessplaying programs around, and by far the best-selling chess program; the latest incarnation is Chessmaster 6000, which adds a number of enhancements to the previous one (Chessmaster 5500). Although the previous Chessmaster programs were good, each of the Chessmaster series had some features that did not work properly and a number of bugs. Chessmaster is no different in this respect: although it is certainly of the best chess programs that you can buy, Chessmaster 6000 has a number of bugs, and some poor features. What do you want from a chess program?
If all you want from a chess program is an engine that can beat the stuffings out of you, you should know that unless you are a Master, there are a number of free programs that can beat 99.9% of chess players; ok, but maybe you absolutely need to have the strongest chess program. There is an ongoing endless debate about which chess program is the strongest, and Chessmaster 6000 is up there among the contenders of Grandmaster strength, so if you buy this program, you can rest assured that if some of the other contenders (Fritz, Junior, Hiarcs and so on) are stronger, they are not much stronger. But just a minute, if you are rated at say, 1800 (which puts you much above the average level), what difference does it make if you play against a program rated 2400 or one rated 2500? In both cases, you are going to have your head handed to you on a platter..
If all you are going to do is play chess, why buy a program when plenty of free chessplaying games much stronger than you are available? The answer is 'for the bells and whistles'. And this is where Chessmaster 6000 shines. Maybe you want to play against different styles or against different strengths, maybe you want to study openings, maybe you want to evaluate your playing strength, maybe you want to have chess lessons, maybe you want to analyze games; Chessmaster can do all that and more.
Chessmaster 6000 features and bugs
This program has most of the features that a modern chess program should have: one of the strongest chessplaying engines available, customizable computer opponents, a 300,000 game expandable database with multiple search criteria, over 2000 named opening variations, one of the best chess tutorial series by chess coach and author Bruce Pandolfini, voice-annotated games by Josh Waitzkin (subject of the Searching for Bobby Fischer movie) and the ability to play chess on the Internet. Waitzkin's voice-annotated games in particular are an original and useful feature (the pieces move about the board while Waitzkin explains the ideas) that can help even strong players to improve their chess. The interface is generally user-friendly.
Most chess players have their own favorite features in a chess program; one of mine is the ability to interactively analyze chess lines, which Fritz 5 does extremely well (see my Fritz review). Although Chessmaster 6000 can analyze games, it cannot do so interactively in real time during a game in player vs player mode, which in my book is a serious defect.
Another key feature for me is the opening repetoire of the game; to be blunt, I consider Chessmaster 6000 's opening repetoire to be a joke. For example, two of my favorite lines are the Goring Gambit and the Morra Gambit against the Sicilian Defence. If you try to practice those openings against Chessmaster, you will be sorely disappointed, because the computer's knowledge extends only to five or six moves for those openings.
The program has a number of bugs (v1.01 is the latest version I played), many of them in the tutorials; things like positions on the board that do not correspond to the text or crashes caused by trying to move pieces. And you can't play the game without the CD, which can be a major headache for those who want to play on a portable when they travel. Mindscape has put out a couple of patches that fix some of the bugs, but some still remain. The CD 'feature' still remains for some players, although the latest patch was supposed to fix it. Let me add that the bugs are not serious enough to warrant not buying the game if it has the features that you want.
The bottom line
So should you buy this program or not? It depends, opinion is divided and polarized on the chess forums on the Internet. My view is that despite its flaws, this program is one of the best available, and the price is very low. For weaker players or for those for whom the more complex features of a program like Fritz 5 might be overwhelming, this is the chess program of choice. On the other hand, if one wants to use the program primarily to analyze lines in real time or to practice openings, or as a database program, one should consider another program like Fritz 5 or Chessbase. Chessmaster 's variety of opening styles, which allow the player to modify not only the playing strength of the opponent but its style, is the best available, and the tutorials are excellent.
One pundit recommends Chessmaster 6000 for players with ratings below 2000 and other programs for players rated more highly, but at least one player above 2000 uses Chessmaster 6000 all the time. If the features that count for you in a chess program are price, learning, playing strength, and variety of playing styles, you can't go wrong with this program; on the other hand, if real time analysis, opening knowledge and strong database capabilities are your features of choice, you should have a close look at some of the other programs on the market.
In my opinion, Fritz 5 is a better program for advanced players, and there may be better programs for very specific applications (database, tutoring, etc), but if I had to rate the programs that I have played, I would rate Chessmaster 6000 second only to Fritz. For beginners or for a first chess program, Chessmaster 6000 leads the pack and is highly recommended.

Read Full ReviewUnless you have easy access to a supercomputer or a friend named Gary Kasparov, you're probably not going to find a more challenging game of chess than what you'll find in the new Chessmaster 8000, the latest upgrade to this venerable series. That's right, this is the first release in over a decade to feature a grandmaster-level engine, powerful enough to give most seasoned veterans a run for their money.
It's an impressive achievement for a series that started out with fairly rudimentary gameplay way back in 1990. Originally, the chess engine (called The King) was the only real focal point. None of the tutorials or voice-annotated games were included (afterall, it was a DOS game), nor was the natural language tutor, which provides 'live' game tips as you play. However, it was just a matter of time before Chessmaster reached its full potential and is now a true computerized grandmaster.
Of course, if you're anywhere near ready to take on the highest difficulty setting, then you probably won't care too much about any other feature in the game. The truth is, most of what makes Chessmaster so great has little to do with the actual gameplay. There's a cornucopia of tutorials, end game scenarios, annotated historical matches, and many other features sure to please diehard fans and newbies alike. However, it's those pesky casual chess players that might find the game lacking in a number of ways.
First, for the diehard fans, Chessmaster continues its slow process of adding more and more tutorials to the game. In 1998, International Master (or 'IM') Josh Waitzkin, who was the subject of the 'Searching for Bobby Fischer' movie, added his somewhat cheeky commentary to a slew of his own annotated matches in Chessmaster 6000. This was one of the coolest new additions, because his insider knowledge was quite captivating and often delved deep into the psychological and mathematical nature of chess. Josh added more annotations last year, and this year he provides 'play-by-play' audio notes on a a series of endgames. Once again, he excels at explaining all the various insider moves, although at times his comments can sound a bit egotistical. In one scenario, he consistently expounded on his audacious moves and criticized his opponent's weaknesses. Still, it's easily the most interesting part of the Chessmaster series.
Most of the other tutorials are richly detailed, providing excellent commentary on everything from opening pawn positions, to queen movement, to complex endgames that are practically guaranteed to improve your chess expertise. In fact, even the game manual is devoted to helping you understand how to use the tutorials. New chess boards and pieces, a wider assortment of opponents, and a new navigation model with resizable windows are all welcome additions for the longtime fan.
New chess players will appreciate all the attention to detail as well. Forget buying chess books - everything you need is included here. The audio instruction for beginners is well-designed, creating a perfect balance between challenging you and yet not being pedantic. A random chess drill generator helps make the tutorials more repeatable. Really, in just a matter of hours, you can learn just the right strategy to start winning chess way more often. Also, the new Kids Room has been significantly enhanced. You can select from a variety of new personalities with specific character traits like 'overvaluing queen' that can help younger players get into the game better. The graphics are justifiably cartoon-like, although lacking any kid-oriented sound effects.
Chessmaster For Mac Download
For those who have purchased previous Chessmater games or who are just casual players, Chessmaster 8000 might seem very similar to previous releases. The graphics engine has been tweaked for shadows and textures, but there still isn't a true 3D mode that accurately depicts a virtual chess game. In Chessmaster, '3D' means the chessboards are displayed on a three-dimensional plane, but you'll never mistake the graphics for being life-like. The series might consider taking it's cues from the Virtual Pool series, which features realistic locations as a backdrop for gameplay. Imagine playing chess at a remote vacation island setting with waves and seagulls in the background, or hunkering down with comrades in a dimly lit Siberian outpost. Better yet, actual game locations like the site of either the FIDE or PCA championships would help improve the vicariousness of the game.
On that note, a career mode would also make an excellent addition. Players could start out in a classroom setting for beginners, then advance through the ranks until they competed at a national or even international level. The side effect of adding this mode would be to help players focus more on the actual game rather than all the teaching modes.
Another area that would help improve the value for casual players is video training. In some ways, the audio tips from Josh Waitzkin make a good compliment to the static graphics, but videos (again, something that was added to Virtual Pool 3) could have easily livened up the game.
While these all might make excellent additions for future releases, Chessmaster 8000 actually takes a step backwards with the multiplayer component. Catering to an increasingly net-savvy crowd, this version off-loads Internet play to Mplayer and other services, and provides a way to connect with other players directly through a direct internet or modem connection. Essentially, it means Chessmaster does not have its own game server on the Internet with chatrooms, ranked play and easy connectivity. This is not a huge surprise given the stronger focus on teaching this year. [Note: As of this writing, Mplayer was not offering Chessmaster 8000multiplier support yet.]
Conclusion
In the end, both hardcore players and beginners will appreciate the various additions to the game and consider Chessmaster 8000 a worthwhile investment. For those who just want a quick pick-up game of chess and are not inclined to spend countless hours figuring out complex opening moves in hopes of squashing your helpless friends and acquaintances, Chessmaster 8000 is not entirely different from the last two versions and offers no compelling reason to upgrade. Let's hope to see some of the more notable advancements mentioned in this review in the next release.
